More notes to myself… (and the other bedroom producers out there.)
These are some of the Kick Drum EQ Tips from some recent videos. I have yet to test these out, so YMMV.
- With the bass drum there could almost be a problem around 300 Hz to 600 Hz. Check the EQ.
- How do the kick and snare sound in the overhead microphones?
- -5 dB for some headroom for all drums.
Remember to spend the majority of your time on the kick and snare for the song. These are the heart and pulse. If these do not hold up, then no amount of EQ will save you. Spend time on your microphone position.
"The more work you put in now and the close as possible you can get to the sound you want is worth it in the end." Bobby Owsinski
I can’t recommend enough Bobby Owsinski’s courses on LinkedIn Learning. I have gone through at least 2 at this point, and I think he has forgotten more about recording music than I could ever possibly know.
For some other kick drum tricks, or just some bass guitar EQ tricks…
